A Pine Township teen is holding a spaghetti dinner Oct. 12 at the A.W. Beattie Career Center to raise money to buy e-readers for patients at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as part of his Eagle Scout project.

The dinner as well as a pinewood car derby and other events are part of Pine-Richland High School sophomore Nathan Cottrell’s effort to raise $3,000 for the readers.

The dinner runs from 3 to 8 p.m. Donations are being accepted for the meal and take-out will be available.

Cottrell said he got the idea of supplying patients with the devices from a family member who knew someone in the hospital.

“One of the things that person wanted to do was read, but could not because paper books cannot be sanitized,” he said.

Cottrell, 16, is a member of Scout Troop 344, which meets at Salem United Methodist Church.

Beattie is located at 9600 Babcock Boulevard in McCandless.
