Students at Eden Hall Upper Elementary School participated in the Young Writers Institute from June 17 to 21.

The institute encourages young writers to come together to learn about all types of genres and be exposed to new genres.

At Eden Hall, there were 24 students. The majority of them were from Pine-Richland, but others from North Allegheny, Winchester Thruston and Seneca Valley participated. The students ranged from fourth grade to eighth grade. There are three groups of students, and each group is assigned to a teacher. There are about ten kids in each group.

Teacher Kathy Giegel is the coordinator of the Young Writers Institute. She was assisted by Pittsburgh Public Schools teacher Jen Mazzacco, Richland Elementary teacher Bonnie Allessi, librarian Beth Shenefiel and retired teacher Deb Newcomer.

Cameron Barnet, a published poet and professional writer, spent a day with the kids. He talked about how he became a writer and conducted a lesson with each group.

The Pine-Richland Chapter of Pennsylvania Association of Gifted Education (PR PAGE) sponsored the Young Writers Institute.
